I'm 34 hours in currently and the game is a slog. You'll quickly see the gameplay formula they've put forth: Do a story mission that involves some macguffin and then do 2-3 side missions of which there are only 4 types. The missions have modifiers on them but they do very little to change up the gameplay. The game suffers from some massive issues with unit recruits. It takes forever to level up a unit, but doing so doesn't feel very rewarding since you get access to fresh recruits of higher levels as you progress the story. There's no incentive to keep your original units around since the new ones come in at a higher level and can have their skill points applied any which way you'd like. You'll run into the issue of having a bunch of level 5 units that are halfway to 6 that you just toss out once you get access to the level 6 units. There are no bonds between units or anything so there's no reason to keep them around. The leveling simply takes too long and doesn't feel fun. The game looks beautiful on the unreal engine and runs without a hitch. As a competitor to games like XCOM, Gears Tactics simply doesn't have enough juice in the tank. There's virtually zero replayability and they've made no attempt at bringing famous modes like Horde over from the main series. Hopefully they'll add lots of content and balance patches over time or at the very least open the game up to the modding community, but I'm not holding my breath. This game is definitely not worth the $60 price tag in its current form. Right now Gears Tactics is a flimsy 5/10 experience - go play XCOM instead. Edit: They abandoned the game and did not, in fact, add anything more to the game.
The game has some good design ideas, but they mostly don't work. As a result, it is probably the most boring turn-based tactics I ever played. + The visual is super tasty. Graphics, camera work, non-grid battlefield... The real candy. + The Jack from extended mode is really fun to play with. - Level design is terrible from tactical point of view. All maps you play on feel the same -- the same spread of cover and LOS-blocking elements. There are no points of interest -- no buildings you need to assault, almost no highground, and even if there is, the weapon range penalties are so huge you will leave it shortly. The battlefield is not interactive -- you cannot blow enemy cover, breach the wall or something similar. - The enemies are also boring and feel similar to each other. - There is no feel of progression. The big part of fun from such games is to build and grow your own squad, select abilities by yourself and build your tractic aroung it. Here most of your soldiers (besides few main characters) are basically throwaway after few missions, because the game will offer you the same class but higher level ones, with pre-selected abilities. So you are either forced to play under-level (and each level means a lot and opens new interesting abilities), or adapt your tackics every few missions for whatever game will randomly generate for you. The gear (armor, weapon attachments) is also random and overall quality is bad, so again, you have either use bad loot that suit your playstyle or better loot that doesn't. - The story is directed very poorly (I haven't played any Gears game before). It didn't engage me and I just didn't care. Overall, XCom or Chaos Gate does everything this game does, but better. Back to playing Long War, I guess :)
