It's hard to put a finger on what is wrong with Planetfall
It's hard to put a finger on what is wrong with Planetfall. As a longtime fan of the series, this is the first one that I will be uninstalling with a week after I bought it. The game feels, hollow. It's missing heart, depth, flavour. It starts out alright, but everything turns into a grind really quickly, much quicker than other 4X games. Building is boring and samey, despite the (potentially) great idea of introducing sectors. But, sectors are just that - lines drawn on the map. No effort was made to make them interesting, or worth having a second look at after you capture them. What a waste. Combat is fun for a few times but then you start to avoid them (just bring a bigger army). I felt I mechanically went through the motions of filling up my armies with new recruits, trying to expand and defend almost methodically. Research was not very compelling either. The tree, made up of minute, personality-less icons, has some variety between the races, but especially for the economy side you will be following the same path every time - you simply cannot afford not to. Simply put, I don't feel challenged, I don't feel entertained. A good game needs to make you feel you are on an adventure of discovering everything it has to over. It has little gems of features that hide away in nooks and crannies that, when you find them, refresh your ideas on how you should play it. Planetfall has none of this. A good friend of mine played it earlier and said "I don't know, maybe I am missing something, another layer that I have not discovered." - I wish that were so. It's just... empty.

A lot of people seem to misunderstand the game, so I figured I'd clarify it
A lot of people seem to misunderstand the game, so I figured I'd clarify it. This is a wargame, not a civlike. It contains civlike mechanics, but if you attempt to play the game passively, building up your empire and economy, you're going to find yourself quickly falling behind, running out of resources, and losing. This is a game about building big armies you use to invade and take land and resources, then turn those resources into more armies, more land, and more resources. City building is far more simple and straightforward than Civ, and can easily feel like there's nothing to do if you're not building armies because city upgrades come far slower than your building of units. Units can have long, detailed statblocks with a long list of benefits, and can then be customized to do all manner of things. A basic soldier wielding an electrical rifle in the early game can quickly become a unit who wields a chain lightning stun rifle that ignores cover. A soldier with a plasma launcher can equip themselves with a medical kit and the means to heal and empower themselves from the flames they create and form a rolling barrage of fire that incinerates anything that dares to approach them. These are not expensive lategame units, these are basic cannon fodder. Late game can include things such as teleporting tanks, hovercrafts that can call down orbital bombardments, multiple flavors of mecha, and drone swarms. This is a game about building armies and waging war. If you're like me and your average 4x game descends into a blood bath that would make Khorne proud, this is among if not the best 4x games on the market. If you want to play sim city, look elsewhere, as this game does not cater to that sort of play.
