How to Defend Your Base

As you progress further in Factorio, the enemies known as Biters are going to begin attacking your base. This can be frustrating as a Biter swarm can destroy a lot of machinery you've worked you hard to build and automate. Defending your base in Factorio is key to thriving and becoming a titan of industry, so here's how to do it.

How to Defend Your Base in Factorio

As you build more machinery in Factorio, Biters will become more aggressive. Sending in attack squads to destroy things in range, or whatever they decide to randomly target.

Using walls to defend your base when it's small isn't a bad idea, but this won't be viable for the long term since an ever-expanding base will need the space to keep growing, and you'll need to be able to walk through that space.

We recommend building turrets alongside the perimeter of your space, spacing them out so where one turret's range ends, the others begin. This will ensure you always have at least two turrets firing on a group of Biters allowing for you to swiftly defeat them without depleting a ton of resources.

A Gun Turret requires 20 Iron Plate, 10 Copper Plate, and 10 Iron Gear Wheels to craft.

Gun Turrets will also require 10 Red Science to research and will be your bread-and-butter defense unit in the early to mid-game. These turrets use normal magazine ammunition that you've been using for your pistol and machine gun. So load them up with enough ammo to take out a group of Biters if they come by.

As you continue to research the tech tree, you'll eventually be able to swap out the Gun Turrets for Laser Turrets, which run off electricity and do not require ammo to use. When you expand beyond this, you'll have access to flamethrowers, the tank, and other means of defense and offense.

Finally launched a rocket at 120 hours. Half the fun was how wrong my early base was. Do not tear it down, build next to it and keep moving.

Tip for new players: leave yourself double the space you think you need between iron and copper. Future you will send thanks when bots have room to fly.

Trains. I avoided trains for 40 hours because signals looked scary. Now my whole base depends on a 12-train network and I cannot imagine playing without it.

The belt math in this game is a genuine rabbit hole. Started a "quick" refactor of my copper line at 9pm, looked up and it was 3am. Ratios matter more than I ever expected.
