Winner of Best Game at the 2018 BAFTA Game Awards, as well as Best Narrative awards at the GDC 2018 Choice Awards, 2018 SXSW Gaming Awards, and The Game Awards 2017, What Remains of Edith Finch is a collection of strange tales about a family in Washington state. As Edith, you’ll explore the colossal Finch house, searching for stories as she explores her family history and tries to figure out why she's the last one in her family left alive. Each story you find lets you experience the life of a new family member on the day of their death, with stories ranging from the distant past to the present day. The gameplay and tone of the stories are as varied as the Finches themselves. The only constants are that each is played from a first-person perspective and that each story ends with that family member's death. Ultimately, it's a game about what it feels like to be humbled and astonished by the vast and unknowable world around us. Created by Giant Sparrow, the team behind the first-person painting game The Unfinished Swan.
So, I'd bought this game a long time ago. It took me awhile because I knew it was a walking simulator, and I'd been burned on those before. When I read about this game though, I thought, "maybe this will be a good one, then." Eventually I bought it on a sale, but never played it. Always wanted to, but never did. I think the reason why was that... it had been built up so much that if I played it, I wouldn't want to reach the end, because something special would end... that I'd have to leave a special place. And ya know, I was right. This game (well, walking simulator) affected me in a way few games have. It really is a special game... it has a melencholy story that I related to quite a bit. The imagination is nearly unmatched in the gaming space. (And I've been gaming since 1981.) It has great voice acting, and well.... I suppose I could go on, but who knows if anyone will see this buried under all the other reviews. I highly recommend this game. It's one of the highest "recommends" I felt I've ever made. You really owe it to yourself to play this. Once you do you'll understand why. 11/10
Absolute masterpiece, one of the most beautiful games I've played in my life. You NEED to play this game, I've never seen so much love and care put into a game. It would've been a 10/10 game, even if they put HALF as much effort into this, but they really went that extra mile and created this insanely beautiful masterpiece. BUY THIS.
“It is astonishing just how much of what we are can be tied to the beds we wake up in in the morning, and it is astonishing how fragile that can be.” ― Neil Gaiman, Coraline Foreword
