Beat the main story in less than five hours

Beat the main story in less than five hours. That was with me messing around and exploring some as well. Great game, awesome concept, and some really good ideas. It just needs more to it. It needs side quests, a richer environment, more AI enemies (like wildlife), maybe a bit higher learning curve for the equipment as well. It seems like you get in and immediately are comfortable enough to make very few mistakes. Maybe more customization and upgradability as well. All told, a good game. That's all though, just good. Not great yet, but has a lot of potential.

Hard to put down

There's a particular style of play that I'm not sure you can even wrap a genre around, which is annoying since it's one of my favorites. It's games where the joy of movement is a central feature. A lot of parkour games capture this, though I'd say every genre has a few examples. Valley captures this feeling so well that some of the other stuff it does almost feels superfluous. The running and jumping feels great on its own, and many set pieces are built around that. The sound and the music combine with this to make some sections downright exhilirating. But it shoots itself in the foot a bit with the other items it adds on, stuff that seems geared to make it more marketable. Having enemies you have to shoot was mediocre, but making your ammo come out of the same pool as your other abilities made a few parts frustrating. And having to hunt for upgrades involves the sort of environment scouring that didn't feel proper in a game built around speed and jumping. Also, and this goes out to all gamemakers, this is not elementary school, quit trying to pass me notes. Reading huge chunks of text while I'm trying to play a video game is a sloppy way to stuff more lore and background into your product. The voice recordings were fine, but when I want to read long text-based stories, I'll find a game that's properly built around that. A game like this should define its story through the environment and the players actions. But otherwise it was a fun game that never overused any of its play mechanics, and had the decency to end before it wore out its welcome.
