About the Game. The Turing Test is a challenging first-person puzzle game set on Jupiter’s moon, Europa. You are Ava Turing, an engineer for the International Space Agency (ISA) sent to discover the cause behind the disappearance of the ground crew stationed there. Upon arrival a series of puzzles awaits you – tests which, according to the station’s AI, Tom, can only be solved by a human. These puzzles have apparently been set by the missing ground crew – but why have they created them and what are they hiding from? In an evolving story based on mankind’s instinctual need to explore, protect and survive, you’ll delve deeper into Europa’s ice crusted-core and discover that the lines between man and machine begin to blur. Armed with the Energy Manipulation Tool (EMT), solve puzzles to open the way forward as you learn the true cost of human morality
The Turing Test is a fun, 6-8 hour puzzle game that's not particularly hard but not that easy either. It has an interesting premise and an engaging story, the puzzle mechanics were enough to keep me interested the whole way through, and I enjoyed my time through The Turing Test. Why the no then? Because in a stunning feat of ineptitude and bone-headed decision making, the Devs decided to disable subtitles on 90% of the story's dialogue for no good reason. In-game, most of the backstory is conveyed through found audio logs of the crew on Europa. All the dialogue between Ava and TOM(The AI) is subtitled. However, these audio logs are not, and they provide a huge bulk of the backstory for the game's plot. As someone who is partially deaf, this is incredibly frustrating. The devs claim this was an 'artistic choice'. All it meant for me is I looked up the transcripts on the internet and felt annoyed every time I had to pause the game because there's no earthly reason to have not included these subtitles except to screw the hard of hearing and waste my time, and such poor decisions should not be rewarded with your money.
There are good Portal clones and there are bad Portal clones. Turing Test is neither. It's got a new set of original puzzle mechanics (which is tough to come up with nowadays) bundled with a gripping tale. It's not as much about the story itself, but the morality behind it - you WILL find yourself at the borders of what you consider right and wrong. The game delivers this story with well built scenes, optimized visuals and surprisingly well done voice acting (considering the scale of this game). In conclusion, it's a polished and unique piece of art that is worth its full price.
NOTE:I haven't played Portal or Talos. I have no background with the other games that this was compared to but I have read some of their impressions but will compare it with "The Witness" 1 Playthrough will last you around 8-10 hours. It is just right for a puzzle game for me. This game was made as a sort of a followup to those games mentioned in most reviews. The puzzles here specially when compared to another puzzle game "The Witness" is easier by quite a margin. You do need to use your brains in thinking but not as hard as i had to compared to The Witness. Majority of the puzzles only have 1 solution and they can be done in a fair amount of time. The hard ones are quite few and far between. A major change i like (compared to The Witness) is that this has a STORY which is easily understood. Though they are just voice overs technically but the reality of the situation is and can be plausible in the near uture of space travel Pros- -STORY It has a story and the ramifications of it can be easily felt if you follow along with it per chapter and area. -Graphics and sounds are very good. I had to turn off mining too appreciate the lights and effects. OST is top notch specially the Voice(in the BioLab and latter parts) which reminds me of Inner Universe by Origa -Creative ways to solve puzzles -You do not need hints for the puzzles and just rely on your own wit(even optional 1) -Due to the game being by chapter\area, which can sometimes be finished quickly, I had never had an issue just to play 1-3 chapters and then resume mining. Cons -Easy Puzzles for majority of the game due to the first stages of each chapter sometimes explaining the new mechanic across several levels at the start - Mining while loading the game is TIME consuming
