About The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition

Return to Monkey Island. . About the Game. Back by popular demand, The Secret of Monkey Island™: Special Edition faithfully re-imagines the internationally-acclaimed classic game (originally released in 1990) for original and new audiences alike. The development team at LucasArts is bringing the game into the modern era with an all new re-imagined contemporary art style, a re-mastered musical score, full voiceover, and an in-depth hint system to help players through the game’s side-splitting puzzles. Purists will also delight in the ability to seamlessly switch between the updated hand-drawn re-imagining and the original classic version. The game's twisty plot leads our naive hero on a hilarious, swash-buckling search for the fabled secret of Monkey Island. Tales of pirate wealth lure him to the port of Mêlée with high hopes, no money, and insatiable curiosity. If clever enough, he will win the confidence of Mêlée's pirates and find himself blown by the winds of fate toward the terrifying and legendary Monkey Island -- an adventure that would chill the bones of even the most bloodthirsty buccaneer. Relive the swashbuckling humorous misadventures of the wannabe pirate Guybrush

A quiet favourite

Someone wise once said, "Never pay more than $20 for a computer game." I got this fame for free with a 1x CD-ROM and a Sound Blaster Pro. I've played it countless times, and while the VGA graphics are timeless (and clearly superior to the EGA version), I felt the desire for something a little fresher, so I picked this version up. It's not bad. The new graphics are pretty good, with the unfortunate exception of the ghastly model used for Guybrush Threepwood. Since he's on screen most of the time, you're stuck looking at him, unless you can find a modwith a better model. Well, you're not stuck with him--you can turn the new graphics off and go back to the classic VGA version--but then you don't get Dominic Armato's great voice acting. We lost one of the greats when he abandoned acting to write about food, but one must follow one's heart. And that's the other sticking point with this remake: You can't play the voices with the VGA graphics. I shouldn't be too upset at that, we didn't have any fancy voices when I first played SOMI; that kind of thing was for high-falutin fantasy adventures like LOOM, not for fun pirate adventures. Maybe there's a mod for that, too? But I digress. In any version, this is a classic game and you should play it. If you don't, you fight like a cow.

The Secret of Monkey Island is THE graphic adventure

The Secret of Monkey Island is THE graphic adventure. Funny, engaging, gorgeous art... It's a game full of highlights and worth playing once in your life. That said, I'm not a fan of the new art. I don't like it and if I compare it to the original pixel art I can only name it hideous, I don't understand how it got approved. But since you can switch the art style on the go that is not a problem (for me). The added voices are great though. So the only problem with this game is why the hell can't we play with the original graphics and the new voices. There is not an option for that. Judging by what I read on forums a lot of people would love to be able to. And it is possible using ScummVM and following a slightly complex tutorial, but... it should be an ingame option.
