The Banner Saga is a beautiful story-driven turn-based strategy game/RPG lasting about 8-12 hours
The Banner Saga is a beautiful story-driven turn-based strategy game/RPG lasting about 8-12 hours. Overall, I thought it was a great experience and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys tactical strategy games like Fire Emblem and XCOM. Its major strengths are its fantastic art, reminiscent of classic Disney or Don Bluth animated films, good soundtrack, and relatively challenging and compelling battles. My primary complaint with the game is that its story is told in a bit of an exhausting way with a ton of dialogue that's not easy to care about, and I was really ready for the game to end a few hours before it actually did. Also, the game feels episodic and I'd imagine more content is on the horizon. If that's the case, I really feel like the experience didn't need to be as padded out with so many seemingly same-y towns and encounters. Still, The Banner Saga is a really ambitious title and one of the better strategy games I've played in recent memory (and certainly the most visually striking).

Gorgeous atmosphere that stays with you long after you finish the game
Gorgeous atmosphere that stays with you long after you finish the game. Mature story and consequences. An unforgettable game that is in a category of its own. Like it or hate it, you must try it out for yourself, since there is nothing quite like it out there.

Better than expected
About the only complaint I have about this game is the fact that it feels almost designed from the ground-up to be a tablet-interface-style game (that always annoys me when I'm using a mouse and keyboard, just a personal pet-peeve)... but that's it. The music is awesome. The combat is challenging and definitely causes you to think very carefully about the people you bring to the fights you engage in and how you go about fighting them. The voice acting is very good, if a little on the sparse side for me... and the art... my god, the visuals are STUNNING. I didn't think that a still image with some small smoke and flame elements could evoke my shock before I reached a particular point in this game. The characters are all drawn very well, and each character is very distinct from each other. I confess that I'm a little lost and haven't learned names, but I can tell that I'm eager to finish my first playthrough and then rack up again to try some different choices... To say nothing of getting around to the second game in the saga.... Bottom line, a steal at the sale price, a solid investment of money and time at its regular price.
