My childhood is back: I played the first two games as a kid so the Syberia games always hold a very special place in my heart. I was deeply impressed with this one - it doesn't disappoint and does the original games justice as well as being more about stories and characters this time around, all while exploring new ways of narration. I adore it completely. ♥
A beautiful, heartfelt journey and a proper sendoff to Benoît Sokal who sadly passed in 2021. The game is a massive improvement to Syberia 3 in every sense, and really shows off what the Unity engine is capable of. There's a distinct push for giving the story priority in this entry, but I kind of liked this shift. The puzzles are still there and you'll find secondary objectives, but they're both effective tools to keep the story moving forward this time - more so than the earlier games. Also, you can jump into this without playing those. There's a nice optional recap in the menu, available from the start.
I really wanted to like this game. It many ways, it's a fitting 4th chapter in the saga of Kate and Oscar. But it's not a point-and-click adventure; it's an interactive story. "Game play" primarily comprises clicking on all the hotspots and expiring dialog options so the story can move forward. There is no branching or decision-making for the player. The few puzzles in the game involve moving switches to open a box or start a mechanism. Having said that, if you are interested in a 10-hour story involving Kate and Oscar, with lengthy melodramatic cut scenes, beautiful artwork and a classic Syberia-ish soundtrack, ignore my downvote. It does a fine job of telling a reasonably interesting story. It's just very much different from the classic p&c adventures that were Syberia 1 and 2.
