Hard to put down

I am a 73 year old man and have enjoyed game playing since playing Elite in 1984 and eventually gained Elite status. Over the years I have played thousands of games including many Railway games but I have never in all those years enjoyed a simulation as much as Railway Empire. It is outstanding in its construction and handles any layout you envision in setting out your own dream railroad. The people who are involved in the creation of this product are to be commended for their abilities as game makers and in the improvements that improve it with each update.Anyone interested in this unique type of simulation should invest in Railway Empire and enjoy what in my mind is the best sim of its kind on the market to date.Thank you for this amazing sim.GO OUT AND BUY IT.

Firstly - I enjoy this game!

Firstly - I enjoy this game! It's fun, the graphics are great and track laying is challenging. But I can't help but compare it to the 1990 Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon and it fails in the one HUGE area that Sid's games always shone - balance and game play. A 1830 Grasshopper can pull the same 8 carriages as the end game engine - Sid: start's with 2 carriages and increases as engine power increases. The track corners are a ridiculously huge radius - Sid: tight corners forced a train to slow down Time is crazy - 10 years into a 100+ year game and I've connected every city and my first city has grown to 80% of it's max size - Sid: It was actually fun to play through the entire rail age as increasing train power actually meant something. Freight payments are fixed and irrespective of distance so there is no incentive to do long hauls (city growth is OP anyway) - Sid: A city is missing a material - you'd haul it across the entire map and be proportionally rewarded. City demand is unbalanced - a late game city needs bumper to bumper trains in grain alone to feed. Sid: late game cities were fed by late game engines which could carry more. Map scale is wrong - combine bumper to bumper feed the beast trains (ie need multiple parallel tracks to fit the req'd number of trains) + huge radius corners and the challenge is actually fitting in tracks into every square inch of land. The game is sooo close - the game engine is good - I would hope the above issues could be resolved. I've enjoyed the game but the above means I wouldn't bother with any expansions - my interest won't last that long, which is a shame because I love this genre. I'm going to give it a thumbs down because the overly positive reviews are hiding the unfortunate truths about this game.

I am not a "hard core" gamer so don't know how valuable this will be

I am not a "hard core" gamer so don't know how valuable this will be. I played the beta for a few hours and have finished the formal part of the first campaign of this final version. I am enjoying the games and the challenge of getting goods to market. I haven't really figured out the warehouse issue so am not utilizing all the tools, even so its fun! For those who like "building/tycoon" type games it should be a blast. As I am in my late 70's I have lots of time to futz around with this stuff and am not too stressed about some of the issues that "real" gamer's seem to be concerned about. There has been some discussion about price but by the time I've played this for 300 or 400 hours the amortized cost is pretty low, besides my wife bought this for my birthday! I have really enjoyed the graphics and riding the trains. I'm not sure about all the info available but it would be nice to be able to have a side bar pull down that shows all my stations and their current conditions. Scrolling across the map to check on my towns is not real efficient and in the beta cost me a lot of time in the second campaign when I had competitors. I would recommend the game to peope like me. Hope this helps the tyro's out there.
