My video review
My video review Mandagon surprised me. I had to double check that this game is actually free; I mean, the pixel art is top notch. Clearly a lot of time was put into creating a breath-taking atmosphere. Too bad that the gameplay was not up to par. Positive:

Free to play from Blind Sky Studios, MANDAGON can be finished in under an hour. It has five achievements, all very attainable within a single playthrough. What drew me was the Tibetan theology and philosophy. I was curious to see how that got explored through the themes of life, death, sacrifice, etc. I don't feel I came away with any deeper understanding but I'm still happy with an hour well spent on a lovely, pleasing demo. The geometry and artistry of the architecture and environment is vastly appealing to me. The "limbo" feel of this Tibetan Bardo comes through surprisingly well in the unusually detailed, expressive and charming pixel style. There's entrancing music. It's a highly meditative soundtrack. You get the idea of the little narrative and the game's theme through reading these wisdom totems. The phrases on some of them probably don't make much sense individually until pulled together and taken as a whole. The platforming is 100% standard fare. I laughed once when taking a giant leap into the air and falling for ages; I somehow landed precisely where I needed to be. The map is minimalistic, which is fine. The total area is so small you'll find your way quickly enough. I'd love to see more work from this team. The art and music are wonderful and inspired. Positive review, recommended to anyone who can spare one hour for something different.
