Hard to put down

What sets Galactic Civilizations III apart from other 4X strategy games, is rather than allowing the fun of the game to come simply from the player’s investment and satisfaction in learning its systems, Stardock have a great world-builder. Typically, the genre of 4X space games are deeply unforgiving, at times feeling as if you were playing chess with a computer that mathematically knew every correct move to make. When strategy becomes a notice of pattern or the anticipation for an algorithm to kick in that would allow a mistake, it no longer feels rewarding. Yet, there’s a focus on fun here that manages to find a balance and encourages newcomers to step in and enjoy. The Steam Workshop will contribute a lot to your enjoyment of Galactic Civilizations III as well, especially if you’re a science fiction fan. The workshop allows you to integrate ships and modifications from a variety of other series and worlds. Everything from the Millennium Falcon to the Bebop has been crafted by dedicated fans for your enjoyment in the game. Reviewed version is the Galactic Civilizations III Gold bundle with all DLCs. THE GOOD - Amazing graphics - Events and things happening every turn - Lots of interesting and useful government types - Crisis events works well THE BAD - Ideology restriction on government types - Inability to host a game and play with friends that don't own the expansions. 9/10

I preordered this game, and I wish I hadn't

I preordered this game, and I wish I hadn't. Returning players will find only disappointment; This game is less feature-complete than pre-expansion GalCiv 2 wass. Repetitive events, no espionage, single-minded AI. Even a year later, it's still plagued with bugs, glaring typos and art assets that seem like placeholders. Stardock have kept their focus on milling out DLC after DLC over solving persistent issues. Some of these cash-in DLC are brazenly based on features which used to be GalCiv/GalCiv 2 gameplay staples. Go play Stellaris instead, or Endless Space.

Wait for a sale

I really tried to like this game, but after 35h I have to come to the conclusion that it is very hard to like this 4X game. (played with all the dlc) It basicly fails 3 out of the 4X. Exploration is good and fairly interesting But expanding is hardly feasible as even with habitable planets set to common, you barely find any, especially near your homeworld, while the AI scoops up the majority of them on a pace you can never simulate, even on normal difficulty. Compare it to starting in flat desert as far as the eye can see in Civ, every time Exploitation: The way you improve your planets is actually interesting. Except it's irrelevant 90% of the time, as it's almost always impossible to make decent hubs (where improvements next to eachother give adjency bonusses) because of terrain. On top of that, you can't even choose where your capital (arguably the best improvement) goes As for extermination, I hated stacks in Civ 4, and this reminded me again why. You have no influence on combat, making it very frustrating when a "certain victory" still costs you 60% of your fleet. Knowing if a ship design will be effective comes when the AI smashes it, and the default ships the game provides have one thing in common: they are usually pretty bad Aside from that, you have the terrible diplomacy (give me all your stuff for this worthless tech, from everyone), a very uninteresting lore (apparently every space creature looks 99% human, even when made out of slime) and faction variety, very poor feedback or ingame acces to information and just in general a failure to keep you interested, where aftera while you just keep pressing next turn tldr: I'm probably missing some very obvious things, but every strategy game I played so far is just better
