I recommend the game, I don't recommend the port until the following two big errors are fixed. We all want this game to succeed and to get the other Fatal Frames released for purchase on Steam, but KOEI TECMO are shooting themselves in the foot with this botched port and will no doubt withhold the remaining games from sale and blame the playerbase for not lapping up this problem riddled game. I'll reiterate that we like the game, but hate the port. Incredibly basic issues are currently in this game including one I haven't seen in over 2 decades. The game speed is tied to framerate (which there is no in-game option to limit) so the speed of everything is variable to your rig often running 10 times faster than they should. This problem was solved way back in the DOS days and there is no reason for it to occur today. Yet another issue with Japanese devs either not understanding/caring about PC or not knowing how to code- no mouse support for aiming which can not be bound to the mouse, default controls for aiming up, left, right, and down respectively are u, h, ;, and n. On top of those issues, it doesn't support modern resolutions. Pass until it gets fixed. I pre-ordered to show support for my favorite series returning to modern storefronts but I was wrong to place any trust in KOEI TECMO.
This is so much better than I initially expected. Rather than a Halloween one-night stand for lonely weebs, Maiden of Black Water is a really well-executed horror adventure. While it's not as scary as it wants to seem, its exceptional sound design and solid art direction set a very unique creepy tone with enough tension to keep things interesting. Think Chilla's Art's games but, well, actually good. Although it does overstay its welcome for a good couple of hours in a poor attempt to tell a story, it's hard to get mad at it because of how fun the combat system is. You'll be dancing around ghosts trying to capture as many of their weak points at once as possible, juggling different film types, using special lenses, mastering counter-attacks — and just having an awesome time in general. There is plenty to enjoy even when the game reuses the same locations and enemies, which is surprisingly often. I'm not sure about ever going back to see all the extra content, but I had a blast during my first run nonetheless. Maiden of Black Water has both great style and engaging gameplay, a rare sight for the genre that usually struggles to make the two go along. If it is indeed the lowest point of the series like some people say, I'm really looking forward to checking out the rest of Fatal Frame soon. P.S. In case you're worried about the port quality, they fixed every single major issue within the first several days. The game runs perfectly fine now.
