As I approach the age of 40, I have begun to notice a certain trend in my gaming habits. Maybe it's the process of maturing, maybe it's becoming a parent, or maybe it's just getting old and grumpy. Whatever the true explanation, I find myself avoiding gratuitous violence in games these days. Instead, I seem to be attracted to solving environmental puzzles, exploring the (game) world around me, and seeking the emotional engagement of good storytelling. Eastshade is such a game. In Eastshade you explore a lush and beautiful island, perform quests for its anthropomorphic inhabitants, solve the odd puzzle, and take screenshots that become paintings in the game world. There are no enemies to fight, no horrible impending doom to ward off, and no monsters to chase you around as you go about your business. Eastshade is no paradise - the inhabitants have many problems for you to solve and not everyone you meet is honest about their intentions or requests. But the game is an excellent example of what adventuring can be when combat and violence are not on the menu. The game is not without a glitch here and there; the game is made by a very small team after all. But it was rare that I found that any little hiccup detracted from my experience. If anything, Eastshade will do what all good stories and games do - leave you wanting more. I certainly want more Eastshade and was a little sad when I realized that my time on the island was coming to an end. If the developers make a sequel or some DLC, I would certainly buy it!
Very cozy. A game where the focus is on the pretty landscape and solving small problems for people living peaceful lives. If your favourite part of Bethesda games is ignoring the plot, picking up crafting ingredients, and talking to silly NPCs - then this is for you.
