Chained Echoes is a story-driven JRPG where a group of heroes travel around the vast continent of Valandis to bring an end to the war between its three kingdoms. In the course of their journey, they will travel through a wide array of diverse landscapes spanning from wind-tanned plateaus and exotic archipelagos to sunken cities and forgotten dungeons. Take up your sword, channel your magic or board your Mech. Chained Echoes is a 16-bit SNES style RPG set in a fantasy world where dragons are as common as piloted mechanical suits. This game is a work of art
This game is a work of art. I grew up with FF4, Chrono Trigger, FF6, FF7 etc and since then it's been very hard for me to get into RPGs. The overall story is incredible and the writing sticks out to me. While I enjoyed games like Triangle Strategy and DQ11 recently, going into this game all I could think about was how much better the writing is. It's shockingly good. Bit of humour in as well had me laughing many times too. The gameplay has additional depth beyond Chrono Trigger and FF6, and it's the modern touches that I really really enjoy. Makes me think of how Path of Exile did alot of improvements to the Diablo 2 template. Choosing/upgrading skills, the quest rewards, the loot system, slotting equipment/gems etc add tons of customizability/depth but it's not overwhelming. The music is good, but not great. Some tracks are super catchy and could land in a Chrono Trigger/FF6, but there is a solid 1/2 of them that are just ok. That's honestly the major difference for this game vs FF6 and Chrono Trigger in which all tracks are godlike. TLDR: Great story, gameplay of Chrono Trigger/FF6 with nice modern touches, but the lack of godlike music makes this a solid 9/10 instead of a 10/10 for me.

Now that I've 100% the game, I can give it a fair review
Now that I've 100% the game, I can give it a fair review. It took around 45 hours to 100% it, ignore the 62 hours (I fell asleep twice playing the game, this is normal for me and not a comment on the state of the game). There are very few games released in the past 10 years or so that I hold with a very high regard. Games that I went into with a high expectation and still came out blown away. Chained Echoes is one of them joining the ranks of other greats like Cross Code and Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga. You'll notice they're also indie games. Story: 8
