PC owners beware

PC owners beware. Like many others (see discussion thread, `Tips for playing on PC', I've had increasing problems with disappearing or non-functioning hotspots. Due to this I've abandoned the game near the end of chapter 2. Unfortunately Steam tell me I'm not eligible for a refund because I've exceed the game time limit - ironically, due to repeated failed attempts to solve puzzles that involve the said malfunctioning hotspots. Because of this I can't possibly recommend the game to PC owners (nb I have Windows 10, 64 bit). Even without this problem I found the game a little disappointing due to the fairly simple puzzles. It's great if you want lush visuals and nothing too taxing in the gameplay.

Great ideas, rough execution

I'd only recommend this game if you enjoy spatial/mechanical puzzles, because that's the only kind you'll find here - no logical deductions, no solving of mysteries, just moving/rotating elements of the world to align with patterns and inscriptions. The landscape is very pretty and the story is genuinely intriguing, but I found most of the puzzles tedious. The constant expository comments also took me out of the experience somewhat (at one point Norah actually says 'exposition' instead of 'expedition' - Freudian slip?). The gameplay is a bit clunky (long walking distances, awkward ladder climbing, cursor blending into surroundings, lack of clarity in what you're meant to achieve). If you're super into Lovecraft and rotating objects in your mind, go for it, otherwise I'm not convinced this game's strengths are enough to compete with its weaknesses.

One of the best games you could end 2020 with

One of the best games you could end 2020 with. Call of the Sea is extremely engaging in all of its aspects. The atmosphere created by the sounds and music makes you enter this world and stay in it along the incredible adventure of Norah. The characters and the story are well developed, thanks to the different items you find all over the place that give you details of how these characters were and what happened to them. Not to mention the incredible voice acting it has. The puzzles are varied in their style: from timing to rhythm, memory, and spatial reasoning. It's a must-play for anyone that enjoys exploration, story-rich, puzzle games.
