Preparing for The Fungal Wastes

The Fungal Wastes is the third area you can visit in Hollow Knight after clearing the Greenpath, but you need to prepare before making the journey. This Hollow Knight walkthrough explains where to go next after beating Hornet in Greenpath and getting the Mothwing Cloak, how to prepare for the Fungal Wastes, and where you should go once you're ready.

How to Prepare for the Fungal Wastes

Now that you've beaten Hornet and been rewarded with the Mothwing Cloak, the Knight now has access to one of the most important vendors in the game. To start, head left from Hornet boss arena, then down and to the right, and use your new dash ability to climb back up the right side.

Before leaving the cavern underneath the Hornet boss arena, you can use your dash to reach a Geo Rock. Go left from the arena and follow the path until you reach a ledge just past a small pool of acid. Jump and use the Mothwing Cloak to dash across the gap and reach the Geo.

Destroy the wooden support at the top of the shaft to unlock a shortcut back to the rest of Greenpath, then head south and take the Stag Station to the Forgotten Crossroads.

From there, head southeast until you reach the area where you rescued Sly. Continue right and use the dash to reach another Bench, and the shop of Charm Lover Salubra.

Salubra sells several powerful Charms, as well as Charm Notch upgrades, which allow you to equip more Charms. Each of her wares has its use, but the most powerful are the Shaman Stone (which increases the power of spells), the Longnail (which increases your melee attack range), and the Quick Focus (which reduces the amount of time it takes to heal by channeling Soul).

Buy as many of those as you can afford, then sit down at the Bench and equip them before heading back to Greenpath via the Stagway.

Exit the Greenpath Stag Station and head down the shaft.

Before making your way through the twisted turns of the shaft, you can make a quick stop for a Geo Rock. Head down until you pass a Volatile Mosskin enemy (the fuzzy one with orange toxic vapors) on a wide platform. Head down the shaft against the wall to the left, under the platform.

Travel down until you reach the Geo Rock planted on the right-hand side of the cave wall. Cut the vine holding the slab near the bottom to escape.

Continue until you reach a passage down locked by a gate. Cross over the gate and smack the lever to open it.

The next hidden Geo Rock in the area is just past the gate you unlock near the bottom of the shaft below the Stag Station. Exit through the now-open entrance and head left when you reach the floor below. The Geo deposit is on the left side of the tunnel against a wall and partially obscured by vines.

Be careful! Another flytrap is waiting for its prey just below the Geo Rock.

Head right once you reach the bottom when you reach the bottom of the shaft. Once you reach the next area, a long corridor, stop after you reach the second long platform.

Above the platform's edge is an entrance in the ceiling leading to another shaft. There, you can make a slight detour for a Charm you couldn't get earlier without the Mothwing Cloak. If you want to get this later, continue heading right. Otherwise, read the blue pop-out box.

How to Get the Thorns of Agony Charm - Location

Hallownest Map
The Thorns of Agony is a Charm you can acquire in the Greenpath after defeating the boss and claiming the Mothwing Cloak, giving you a dash ability. To find it, enter the shaft east of the shaft on the western side of the area, where you can visit the Stag Station. Enter the shaft from the corridor below.

Head up a short way and defeat the lone enemy. Proceed into the room right of the tunnel via an entrance marked with a ceiling of thorns.

Leap over the gap to the group of Charged Lumafly enemies, but stop before getting too close. Use the cloak to dash through the Lumaflies when they're not charged with electricity to get past them.

Hop over the thorn clusters and jump onto the column. To continue, drop from the column on the right and time the dash with the Lumafly discharge to reach the safe ground beyond.

Do the same thing with the next thorn cluster and Lumaflies.

Jump onto the ledge with the glowing item. Inspect it to acquire the Thorns of Agony Charm, which, when equipped, will cause thorny vines to sprout around the Knight when he takes damage.

Cut the vine holding the slab on the left to escape. When ready, return to the corridor. Thorns of Agony

Keep going until you reach the first exit downward. You should take this time to enter the first room on the right and rest on the Bench to heal and save your progress.

After resting at the Bench, continue down through the area, and you’ll soon cross into Fog Canyon.

The area to the left of the room above the Fog Canyon entrance houses the Massive Moss Charger mini-boss. This is an optional fight, and not one you need to take at the moment.

Progress Through Fog Canyon

Note: Fog Canyon is home to jellyfish-like enemies. The smaller enemies may be attacked freely, but the larger enemies will rebound from any contact, causing massive explosions. Use caution when navigating the area.

Continue down through the corridor and take the last exit on the right. Head down through that shaft, once again taking the last exit on the right to reach the Queen’s Station, a massive Stag Station.

Head to the bottom of Queen's Station and take a left to enter a room with a Bench and a Stag Station, which you can unlock for 120 Geo. There's also bench on the other side.

Rest there, then take the top right exit to enter the Fungal Wastes.

Quirrel can be found in the Queen's Station on the left-hand side. Speak with him for a brief conversation, in which he talks to you about the station.

Finally beat the Radiance with all bindings off. Hands shaking. Best boss fight of the decade.

If you are bouncing off the difficulty: charm builds are the real game. Quick Slash + Mark of Pride changed everything for me.

Greenpath music still lives in my head. Team Cherry did more with 15 people than most studios do with 200.

Got lost for two hours in Crystal Peak and loved every minute. The map system makes discovery feel earned.
