Advanced Goals

Mods you should download

Try downloading different mods to extend the base minecraft game, some commonly used mods are:

    • Mo' Creatures (Extra animals and enemies)
    • Bibliocraft (Little mod for decoration purpose)
    • Twilight forest mod (New realm, adds new items, mobs, structures and more!)
    • Iron chests (Storage)
    • Thaumcraft 3 (Magic in minecraft!)
    • Industrial craft 2 (advanced machinery and items)
    • Buildcraft (Similar to industrial craft 2)
    • Thermal expansion (Expansion to buildcraft)

Try making iron doors

So, you've done some crafting, explored caves and mines, built a few shelters, and may even have found a few rare materials. Now what? What is there possibly left to do? Many, many, many things.

Building a Semi-Permanent Home

NOTE: Most of the following steps were mentioned inGetting Started, but by this point the player should be setting up a more permanent residence, detailed below.

If you've spent a lot of time mining or commiting to Intermediate Goals, you should consider establishing some kind of a base of operations. It does not have to be permanent, but it must accommodate your basic needs. An ideal semi-permanent home should be a four-block (or more) high dwelling made out of wooden planks or something nice, not cobble or dirt. It definitely needs a door, and should have some windows so that you can get a good look at what's going on outside.

As mentioned in Getting Started, your house should include a Crafting Table and a Furnace. Also, at least one or preferably more chests and a Bed are essential. Defenses are recommended, with something like a wall or a moat of lava/water proving especially helpful as preventative measures that can stave off monster attacks, be careful since lava burns wood and water keeps mobs alive. You should also consider illuminating the inside of your home, since as monsters can spawn next to you while you sleep, for the people that know a bit of redstone you could also make a drawbridge.

Exploring the World

The randomly-generated worlds are larger than any one person can fully explore. In order to venture out into the world without inadvertently abandoning your building and progress, you'll need a Map or compass.

To create a map, you'll need some Redstone, Iron Ingots and Sugar Cane to produce Paper. Redstone can be mined from the bottom 15 layers of the map, Iron can be smelted from ore found throughout the stone deposits, Sugar Cane grows along coastal areas in most biomes. It can be quite challenging to find the materials for a map, specifically Redstone, but it is definitely worth it as  these can really help you navigate the world.

NOTE: every map has limits, and when you venture outside of those limits, you must craft a new map to continue exploring.

Experiment with Redstone and Mechanisms

One of the more complex and in-depth mechanics present in Minecraft is Redstone circuitry. Redstone acts as a sort of 'electrical circuit' for Minecraft, and is capable of doing anything from triggering complex machines like displays to opening a door or setting off TNT. Due to the complicated nature of such circuitry, what can be done with the system is likewise complex. However, it is good to at least begin to play around with some simple mechanisms, such as pressure plates that open doors, piston doors, or arrow-dispenser traps.

A good way to begin learning about redstone and related mechanics is to simply let yourself experiment in creative. Try it for fun! If you find that you wish to move onto more complex projects, there are guides around that provide tips on how to build logic gates, and even help with pre-made circuitry.

Pro tip: always carry a water bucket. Lava, fall damage, cliffs — one bucket fixes all three.

Redstone contraptions are the closest games have come to real programming. Built an auto-sorter from a tutorial and felt like an engineer.
