Minecraft Helpful Tips

Helpful Tips:

    • Build random Tools and such. They might just come in handy.
    • Build traps for Mobs.
    • On your first night, get a lot of Wood.
    • On your first night, make caves in mountains to quickly establish shelter.
    • Do not go any longer than you absolutely must without shelter.
    • Before entering caves, make sure you have lots of wood.
    • Construct fences to help block out mobs in an area you wish to build within.
    • Build minecart tracks so you can more quickly and easily navigate your world.
    • Always keep light around.
    • Do research ahead of time: experiment to see what works and what doesn't.
    • Keep Coal handy, both as material for Torches and for Smelting purposes.
    • If you don't have available shelter when night falls, hide!
    • Always keep a Chest with extra items (axe, sword, ect.) readily available within your shelter.
    • When you kill an animal, it won't spawn again in the same area, so think twice before you kill just for killing's sake.
    • Never have all your items on your person at once. Only take what you will need, in order to ensure that you don't lose all of your stuff when you die (and so that you can more easily grab cool new stuff that you find on your travels).
    • Work as a team in multiplayer play; four hands are far better than two.
    • If you see coal ore, mine it. You can never have too much.

Be patient!!!

    • Make sure to leave space around your bed, or else when you die you'll spawn from your default location when the world first generated, rather than by your bed, or even suffocate.
    • Position Bookcases around Enchanting Tables to make them more powerful.
    • Do not place bookcases any further than 2 blocks away from the enchantment table, there should be at least one block of space between the bookcases and the enchantment table and don't put anything in between.
    • NEVER DIG DOWN!!!
    • Use Charcoal instead of Coal when crafting torches to save coal for more important projects.
    • Keep a wiki open on your browser so you can quickly look up tools and items or download the minecraft lite app for smartphones (free!).
    • When attacking a creeper sprint at it and hit it once to knock it back and if it does explode block using right click to minimize damage.
    • Have a general sense of direction for your home or make a compass, or screenshot the coordinates .
    • Be careful with cave spiders they can still go through a 1 block space and swarm you!
    • If you're low on health and are being attacked by monsters, simply cover yourself with blocks.
    • Skeletons predict where you're going to move and fire arrows, so be careful in dark places such as caves or on edges and hide behind blocks.
    • Objects such as beds, chests, etc. cannot be placed on glass blocks.
    • It cannot be stressed enough that enemies spawn in dark areas. Make sure your shelter is well lit via glass pane (or glass blocks) and torches. Try to stay away from having open spaces in your shelter, some enemies can still get through.
    • Gather as much wood and coal as you can find.
    • Re-plant gathered saplings from trees that you have cut down. They will grow into adult trees after some time (or instantly with bonemeal).
    • Try not to venture too far from your shelter.
    • Make your shelter stand out so you can spot it easily or make a trail of something that will lead you back to your shelter, if you make it at your spawn point you can always make a compass.
    • If you tend to go far away from your shelter, make outposts so you can rest if you can't go home.
    • Make pens to store animals (cows, chickens, etc.) that you will harvest or breed later, or use leads to tie them to fences.
    • Set up small homes in caves when on long mining trips (make sure to include furnaces!). Also bring wood to make extra tools and torches.
    • When making farms always look out for enough light and water, since water irrigates 4 tiles away from it.
    • Make enough room for a mushroom farm (about 5x5x7) and bonemeal them, be sure to eliminate all light!
    • When riding a horse look out for 2x2 or 2x1 spaces as they either won't fit or just suffocate you.
    • Look out for water while riding a horse, as it will drown. If you really want to cross water with a horse, hold it on a lead or make a bridge.
    • Hide your animals on multiplayer, you never know when someone gets hungry and passes your animals...
    • When going to the nether be sure to pack up in tools and make decent armor to ensure survivability.
    • In the nether, build with cobblestone/netherbrick/brick... or ghasts will blast it away.
    • When fighting blazes, block them off or place a torch on every single block to stop spawning (Blazes have one of the highest light level spawn rate so they will spawn even with light sources!)
    • Always take flint and steel to the nether so that if a ghast destroys your portal you can relight it or even carry some obsidian to make another one.
    • When searching for a stronghold (overworld), be sure to carry enough blocks, be geared up, and carry at least 15 eyes of ender, because they will break and you never know how much you need for the portal.

Our survival server hit day 500. The nether hub my friends built looks like a metro station now.

Pro tip: always carry a water bucket. Lava, fall damage, cliffs — one bucket fixes all three.

Redstone contraptions are the closest games have come to real programming. Built an auto-sorter from a tutorial and felt like an engineer.
