Jagged Peak - Essential Path Walkthrough
Jagged Peak is an optional region found in the east of Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. While it is technically optional, this region is home to the Bayle the Dread boss fight. This page contains an essential path walkthrough and guide to the Jagged Peak, including important character questlines, powerful blessings, items, and weapons.

Getting to the Jagged Peak
The Jagged Peak can be seen dominating the skyline when looking to the south of the Gravesite Plain, and though you can actually get to it quite early, it’s full of very powerful dragons.
To reach it, cross the Ellac Greatbridge in the Gravesite Plain to reach the Castle Front Site of Grace in front of Castle Ensis, and start heading south. When the path seems to split, follow the main road as it slopes upward past a Messmer Soldier camp.
You should see and hear Drake Warrior Igon as you make your way south. Be sure to stop and speak to him in the road, starting his side quest - this will be very important for the boss of this region.
Keep heading up the path until you reach a Site of Grace, and look for a different path to the right where a man lies screaming. Head past the man along a series of small dragon statues until you are invaded by an Ancient Dragon-Man, and defeat him in combat.
At the end of this road, you’ll find the entrance to a mini-dungeon, the Dragon's Pit, that holds an important secret.
Continue through the dungeon until you reach a large open room with a giant chalice across a pit, and a message that tells you to have courage. You’ll need to put this courage to the test by leaping into the pit, which will send you far down to the bottom of the Dragon's Pit.
Here, you’ll have to defeat the boss of the dungeon, another Ancient Dragon-Man wielding the Dragon-Hunter's Great Katana that you can earn by defeating him. Once he’s been defeated, you can leave the dungeon and you’ll find the Jagged Peak looming before you.
Jagged Peak Walkthrough
Make sure to check the cliff on the right site of this path where you will find a message from Igon.
Entering the Foot of the Jagged Peak, you'll find that like the Abyssal Woods, this region is fairly condensed compared to other areas, and doesn't have as many enemies or loot to find - but there are areas still worth checking out.
Head down the path east to find a pool of water with a few dead dragons, and a sleeping Jagged Peak Drake you can defeat to get a Dragon Heart and Dragonscale Flesh. It's worth noting that the Dragon Hunter's Great Katana you earned from the boss of the previous mini-dungeon excels at cutting down these drakes fast with its unique weapon skill!
Note that if you take a right at the first major fork in the road where the Jagged Peak Drake can be found, you'll find a detour past some lightning sheep and Farum Azula Skeletons guarding a body with Red Fulgurbloom x3. This will lead to the large body of a slain dragon, and on the way is a small stone tower ruin that holds Igon's Cookbook 1.
The impossibly large dragon corpse is now being used as a Grand Altar of Dragon Communion site, and a friendly Dragon Priestess watches over the site. She'll ask if you wish to partake in the devouring of draconic essence by defeating the oldest and most vile of dragons who lives atop the Jagged Peak: Bayle. Accept this request, and she'll give you the Ancient Dragon's Blessing to use against Bayle to dramatically increase your defenses (and you can return to claim more if you fail). While you're here, you can ask more about Bayle, or interact with the Communion Site to spend the Dragon Hearts you've earned from Ghostflame Dragons or Jagged Peak Drakes to buy the Ghostflame Breath Dragon Incantation.
Putting the Dragon Priestess to Sleep
Simply accepting the request of the Priestess to kill Bayle will earn you specific rewards when the job is done, but there is an alternate way to complete her questline. This will require you to have picked up the Black Syrup from Moore after first meeting Thiollier, and giving it to him so that he could create and sell Thiollier's Concoction to you (if Moore or Thiollier have left their initial locations, you won't get another chance). Change the time of day to night and return to the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion (you may have to do this at a different site of grace) and you should spot the Priestess in a trance while she communes with her lord Placidusax. You can feed her the concoction while she is in this state, causing her to fall in a deep sleep. Speak to her the next day to learn that it has caused her to fail her vows to her lord, and you'll gain a different reward after Bayle has been defeated (see her Questline Page or the bottom of this page for more details).
From the giant dragon corpse, you can scour the body for several Sharp Gravel Stone and Dragon Communion Harpoon, and also hop over its feet to find the hidden optional region of Charo's Hidden Grave. Behind the back of the dead dragon is another small plateau area that holds a Dragon Communion Grease.
Return to the pool of water where the first Jagged Peak Drake was, and this time take the northeastern path, which leads you along a mountain cliff to a Spritspring jump. Be sure to look along the northern cliffs before taking the Spiritspring to find a few Farum Azula Skeletons guarding a body that holds the Greater Potentate's Cookbook 6.
Jump up the Spiritspring and cross the rickety bridge to reach the Foot of the Jagged Peak Site of Grace. The sky is getting more violent, and you should prepare to fight more dragons before you're done in this region.
Keep following the path behind the site of grace, which will lead you to a wide open area where two Jagged Peak Drakes are fighting. You can run past, but killing these dragons is a step in Igon's side quest so take a second to take them down. One is much weaker than the other, so it's not a bad idea to let the one with the better health bar defeat the other, then ride in to clean up the second and gain its Dragon Heart and Dragonscale Flesh (the other won't drop anything).
After killing the dragons you will hear Igon speaking to you. Walk up the path and you will encounter him in the road. Speak to him to get Igon's Curled Finger, which will activate his summon sign for Bayle's Boss Fight, allowing you to summon an unbroken and fearless version of his soul to help you.
Behind Igon is a spiritspring, which leads directly to another spiritspring. Keep following the path forward then go through the cave on the right. This next area has some rolling rocks, so be ready to dodge them as they come down the path.
Up where the rocks were falling from you will see an item on the ground, a Scadutree Fragment. Go left to proceed.
Jagged Peak Scadutree FragmentAt the top of the next hill is another dragon, Ancient Dragon Senessax. He's optional, so if you don't feel like fighting him right now simply run past and go up the path to the left. If you do stand to face him, make use of the Dragon-Hunter's Great Katana or similar dragon-damaging grease to get an advantage, and watch out for the ancient dragon's lightning based attacks. Defeating it will earn you both an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, and a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
At the top of the nothern sloping tunnel path full of dead dragons is yet another site of grace, Jagged Peak Mountainside. Activate it, but be sure to check to the right first -- you'll find groups of Dragonslime around a dead end where a body holds Igon's Cookbook 2.
Next, go up the path to the left. Dodge the lightning strikes coming from almost every direction and climb up around the dragon corpses until you reach another Spiritspring Jump. This will take to high up to a narrow mountain ledge path leading south.
As you cross along the ledge, you can spot a lower area where lightning continues to strike (and a gap in the ledge can cause you to fall down here). Jump down on purpose to find a lower ledge returning back down to the Spiritspring. If you encountered the "Domain of Dragons" painting in the Shadow Keep, you'll be able to spot this same vista along the lower ledge, and the ghost of the painter will appear and gift you a Rock Heart. Much like the Lamenter's Mask, you can unequip all of your armor and use this item to transform, gaining a boost to certain abilities!
Return to the high ledge path and jump across the gap to find another Spiritspring jump surrounded by lightning stikes. Ride it up to a high ledge filled with more dragon corpses, but be sure to look back to the northwest.
There's a slightly lower ledge that's above the one you traveled in on, and full of Dragonslimes. Fight or move past them to find a large group of them at a dead end with a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
Return to the second Spiritspring and jump up to where all the dragon corpses are to find another tunnel entrance leading east. Inside the tunnel, you can find a path leading up to the left, but be sure to move straight ahead first to find more Dragonslimes guarding an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
The path on the left leads us to, you guessed it, another Spiritspring jump. Thankfully this is the last one, leading us directly to the Jagged Peak Summit site of grace and Bayle's front door.
Bayle the Dread Boss Guide
Recommended Scadutree Blessing 10 - 15Bayle the Dread is very similar to the other dragon bosses from Elden Ring, sporting a ton of health, big sweeping attacks, and a mix of fire and lightning magic. His attacks are slow but deal massive damage, so make sure you shore up your defenses.
In some ways Bayle can be considered a puzzle boss, similar to Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy. He can be defeated with any old weapon, but the game seems to suggests that you should use the Dragon-Hunter’s Great Katana, which is dropped by the Ancient Dragon-Man you defeated to get into Jagged Peak. This weapon deals extra damage to dragon enemies, and has a powerful ranged Ash of War, Dragonwound Slash, that allows you to attack Bayle while staying out of range. Just make sure you have enough Cerulean Tears to last the whole fight. Similarly, the Ancient Dragon's Blessing given by the Dragon Communion Priestess gives you a massive damage reduction to survive Bayle's powerful and hard to dodge attacks!
You should also enlist the aid of Drake Warrior Igon for this boss battle. Igon’s side quest is almost entirely contained within Jagged Peak, and culminates in him helping you defeat Bayle and get his revenge. Defeating Bayle after getting Igon’s Furled Finger completes his quest, earning you his weapon, Armor Set and Bell Bearing. Don’t deny Igon his revenge (he's worth bringing just for his iconic speech alone!)
Upon entering the boss arena, Bayle has a few different attacks he will use from far range. First is a simple fire breath, directly at you. The flames have a wonky hitbox do don’t try and skirt them too closely, instead run perpendicular to the flame immediately.
The other is a wide flame that he spews from left to right. This one you can simply dodge roll through, just run toward the wave of flames, then roll through it just before it reaches you. If you manage to get close enough there is a small opening to attack afterwards.
Bayle also has a few gap closing attacks he can use. One is a jumping slam, Bayle will leap high into the air, pausing momentarily before coming crashing down on top of you. There isn’t really a good tell for when he is about to drop, so just wait until the moment you see him descending, then roll backwards to dodge. Rolling backwards is preferred because we want to end up close to his head so we can attack.
Another gap closing attack is his bite/grab. Bayle’s will crouch down, mouth open and fizzling with electricity. A moment later, he will lunge toward you with a quick bite. Again we want to roll backward, then attack his head directly after he misses.
His final leap attack is a simple jab, which Bayle telegraphs by rearing his wing backward. He then leaps across the arena and smashes it into the ground. This is another where you simply want to dodge roll backwards so you can attack his head as he recovers.
Once Bayle is within melee range he has a few different bites and slams he will alternate between. Most common is his lightning slam, where he raises his “claw” skyward, charging it with electricity, before slamming it down on top of you. Dodge as he swings his claw downward, then you have an opening to attack his head.
When Bayle stands up tall and roars into the sky he is about to execute his four hit combo. This consists of a single punch from the left claw, followed by two quick sweeps with his right, then ending with the lightning slam detailed above. You want to watch his claws closely and dodge the second swing at the last possible moment so you can avoid both at once. Then simply dodge the lightning slam as usual before attacking.
If Bayle rears his head back with no electricity coming from his mouth he is about to do a two bite combo. He moves forward with each bite, so make sure you roll back in time with the movements if his head to avoid the bites.
One of Bayle’s trickier attacks is his tail sweep. He will jump over your head, landing a short distance away facing away from you. Then, he will do a 180 to face you again, whipping you with his tail as it comes around. You need to notice the jump and react quickly so as not to be caught off guard. Roll through the tail and you should end up close to Bayle’s head and primed for a counter attack.
Bayle has one more breath attack he will use when you are in front of or beneath him. For this one he simply spews fire directly down onto the ground, dealing damage in the area beneath him. For this one, simply run backwards away from the flames, they don’t reach too far. If you have a ranged attack (such as the Dragonwound Slash) you can hit while he's still breathing fire. Otherwise, wait for the flames to dissipate then run back in with a jump attack.
Another spell in his repertoire is his honed bolts. Bayle will lean down and roar, causing a small AoE that deals damage and knocks you back. After the roar, lightning will start striking down on top of you, about a dozen bolts in total. You can avoid these by running or rolling. The problem is, Bayle will continue to attack you as you are escaping the bolts so make sure you keep an eye on him to dodge whatever he follows up with.
With all of these attacks on Bayle’s head there is a chance you will get a stagger before the start of phase two. Bayle has a very long stagger animation, so long that you can probably fit in one if not two charge attacks before you activate the critical hit. Make the most of the moment, because the fight is about to get much harder!
At about 60% health, Bayle will lean down and the music will cut out. Bayle will charge himself up, before releasing a massive blast in the area around him that deals huge damage. If you are at full health and are feeling bold, you can actually keep hitting him while he charges this blast up. Just be ready to quickly stand up and heal. This is also an opportune time to buff up or drink your Wondrous Physick, and activate the Ancient Dragon's Blessing if you're feeling confident.
After the blast, Bayle flies into the air and circles around the arena while shooting fireballs at you. All you need to do is run away from the path of the fireballs (which you can see coming down toward you from the sky) all while keeping an eye on Bayle. After he circles the arena once he will turn toward you and dive toward the ground. The dodge timing is a little weird for this attack, he hits the ground first, then slides toward you. You want to dodge about a second after the landing, just before the dragon runs you over. In this case you want to roll through the dragon, so you end up in front of his face. After the dodge you have a few seconds to hit Bayle’s face for free, just make sure you aren’t standing on top of any of the magma bursts that form after the attack.
In phase two Bayle’s attacks are mostly the same, but some of them have new properties. Many of his normal attacks now have lightning properties, and these attacks now have a follow up attack where bolts of lightning shoot out from the spot of impact. Make sure you watch the ground to see where the lightning is going to strike, and dodge far to the left or right of the slams to get out of range.
In addition his lightning slam, which was a single hit in phase one, is now multiple hits and can chain into other combos. Keep a close eye on his movements before you attack, make sure he isn't rearing back up for another swing!
Bayle also has an all new, more powerful version of the lightning slam. In this version Bayle points his “claw” upward for much longer than usual, and his wings appear. When you see this, run away immediately. After he slams his claw into the ground there is a massive explosion around him, so you want to be well out of range.
If you are feeling risky, you can watch the ground closely and dodge through the explosion. There are three moments: the slam into the ground, the quake, and then the explosion, each one about equal time apart.
The jumping slam attack from phase one now also causes magma bursts to fire out of the ground, make sure you are not standing on the red spots before you choose to attack.
Bayle’s final new attack is a flying fire breath. He flies off into the air, then flies from left to right breathing a stream of flames onto the ground. You need to watch the wave of flames as it spreads across the ground, then dodge roll through it. He then swings around and flies over you, breathing flames in a straight line on top of you. For this one you need to wait until the flames approach, then roll left or right three times to escape the multiple waves of flames.
If the fight goes on long enough Bayle can also use the blast and flying fireball attacks from the start of phase two again, so be ready to back off if you see him charging up. With the help of your Katana and Igon, you should be able to take this guy down.
Defeating Bayle the Dread gets you the Heart of Bayle and 490,000 runes. You will need to visit the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion to exchange it for Bayle's incantations.
Bayle the DreadCompleting the Jagged Peak Questlines
If you completed Igon's quest you can collect his gear by returning to the spot where we last spoke to him near the dual dragon mini-boss fight. His corpse now contains Igon's Greatbow, Igon's Armor Set, and Igon's Bell Bearing.
Similarly, you can also return to the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion to find the Priestess gone, and in her place is a Priestess Heart and Flowerstone Gavel. Use the altar, and you can exchange Bayle's Heart for either the Bayle's Tyranny or Bayle's Flame Lightning Incantations.
If you've been following our walkthrough, this should complete all main and optional regions in Shadow of the Erdtree. Only one path remains, and will require you to use Messmer's Kindling at the Sealing Tree past the Church of the Bud in the Ancient Ruins of Rauh, and will open the way to the final Legacy Dungeon: Enir-Ilim.
