About Volcanoids

Volcanoids is a base-building open-world survival shooter that replaces the boring old base with a steampunk drill. Alone or with up to 3 other crewmates, explore an ever-changing volcanic island, build out your drill, and fight hostile machines to reveal what's been hiding in the depths of the underground. EXPLORE AN EVER-CHANGING VOLCANIC ISLAND Explore a seemingly abandoned island cursed by persistent eruptions. Utilize your drillship's ability to travel underground to survive these eruptions as you discover new parts of the island, gather resources, and uncover secrets. BATTLE ROBOTS AND DESTROY THEIR MACHINERY Battle hostile mining robots of all shapes and sizes who roam the island's surface as well as underground. Capture any of their resources and technology that might be useful and destroy the rest. CRAFT, UPGRADE AND AUTOMATE The "drillship" is your very own mobile fortress. Customize it from inside out using the building system. Progress through technology tiers to upgrade, expand, automate, and weaponize different parts of the drillship.

I went in with modest expectations and came out genuinely impressed

I went in with modest expectations and came out genuinely impressed. Volcanoids wears its Action, Adventure, Sim influences on its sleeve, and it mostly works. The pitch — A base-building open-world survival shooter that replaces your typical base — is delivered without too much filler. Short sessions work fine here; I rarely lost progress to a bad checkpoint. Performance was solid on my machine, no crashes across a full playthrough. If you are on the fence, give it a shot.

There is a good game buried in here somewhere

There is a good game buried in here somewhere. Volcanoids promises a lot with its Action, Adventure, Sim setup, but the loop wore thin quickly. What it promises (A base-building open-world survival shooter that replaces your typical base) is more interesting than what it actually does moment to moment. It asks for a lot of grinding before the interesting parts show up. The soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting in the quieter sections. Try before you buy.

This one kept creeping back into my thoughts during the workday

This one kept creeping back into my thoughts during the workday. If Action, Adventure, Sim is your thing, Volcanoids delivers it without much filler. It helps that the premise (A base-building open-world survival shooter that replaces your typical base) actually shows up in the moment-to-moment play. Short sessions work fine here; I rarely lost progress to a bad checkpoint. Checkpoints are frequent enough that a bad run never feels punishing. Worth it, especially on sale.
