I don't have much time in but I’m writing because my initial reaction was so strong

I don't have much time in but I’m writing because my initial reaction was so strong. I'll say first that I've done two years behind bars in the U.S. and almost four in a community corrections facility. This game immediately started a mild and pleasant sympathetic nervous response (i.e. fight or flight/adrenaline/epinephrine) because of the very simplified, yet somewhat accurate representation of incarcerated life, with its rigorous, paramilitary lifestyle. I was immediately reminded of the intense cleaning rituals, endless card games, terrible smells, awful food, and the overall lack of privacy and respect from guards and other inmates. In light of all this, my first successful escape was EXILARATING AS HELL! This game will appeal to squares and ex-cons a like! 9.5/10

Whenever I look back at this game in my library, I think to myself

Whenever I look back at this game in my library, I think to myself. 'huh, why haven't I completed this game, it seems like a fun single player game.' then I remember why, not because of the style, not because of the soundtrack or anything to do with the outward appearance, just one small insignificant game mechanic that frustrates me to no end. If you leave any trace of something that can be slightly constrewed as an escape attempt, you are teleported to solitary confinement. Solitary confinement as a game mechanic is fine, IF the guards can manage to get me in there, but no matter where you are, in the air vents? teleported. Hidding in a locker? Teleported. Already outside of the prison? Teleported. The worst part is, they already had a system in place that would be much better for this. Lockdown and reinforcements. When a prisoner goes missing or a wall is out of place, don't just teleport the player into solitary confinement, make the guards actually ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ look for them. PS: This is even more of a problem when trying to frame someone, I put a hole in the back of another prisoner's wall and cut the bars to their cell, all without being noticed, I then hid in a locker and with no evidence whatsoever, I was the one thrown in solitary confinement.

Do I recommend this?

Do I recommend this? YEAH I DO! The Escapists is a game where you are thrown into prison. You must escape the prison, and believe me, that's not easy. Now, I'm going to be honest and give my pros and cons: ~Updated Review~ Pros: - Lots of prisons, and cheap extra prison DLC. - Devs listen to us (community) - Amazing art style. - Challenging, you have to be smart to escape, as it isn't easy. - Lots of items and tons of item combos. - Lots of favorites for inmates. - Map editor + submission to workshop. - A semi-realistic prison feel. - Soundtrack is great! There are new songs during free periods. - Inmates speeches are pretty funny. (personal pro for me) - Multiple ways to escape. (Ex: first prison has about 3 (+) ways to escape!) - Custom inmate names, and choosable skins. Cons: - Lots of waiting, and can get very boring if you're not patient. - Cops / guards catch you easily. This makes a challenge, though! - Gets repetitive once in a while, but DLC makes up for it. - So, if you like prison games and have a lot of patience, then this is for you. My old review can be seen below, and I decided to update it as the game has updated a lot since then. Final Score: 8.5/10 ~Old Review~ Pros: - Great art style. (32 bit?) - Soundtrack is great. Every prison has their own free time song that plays. - Challenging. - Tons of items. - Multiple, and I mean multiple escape routes. The first prison has over 3 escape routes! - Favors are really easy to do. - Inmates' speeches are pretty darn funny. - Developers actually listen to us (the community) - Each prison offers new items and layouts, and gets tougher each time. - Map Editor! - Has a realistic prison theme. Cons: - None, go buy the game! (If you haven't.) That's my short review.
