I went in with modest expectations and came out genuinely impressed. If Action, Adventure, RPG is your thing, 鬼谷八荒 Tale of Immortal delivers it without much filler. The pitch — Tale of Immortal is an open-world sandbox based on Chinese mythology and — is delivered without too much filler. Short sessions work fine here; I rarely lost progress to a bad checkpoint. The UI takes a little getting used to, but everything is where you expect it. I will be back for another run.
A friend recommended it and I owe them one. The Action, Adventure, RPG mix is what kept me playing; 鬼谷八荒 Tale of Immortal knows what it wants to be. On paper it is Tale of Immortal is an open-world sandbox based on Chinese mythology and, and for once the game mostly lives up to that. Pacing is generous, checkpoints are fair, and the whole thing respects your time. The UI takes a little getting used to, but everything is where you expect it. Easy recommend at full price.
I bounced off it twice before finally giving up. The Action, Adventure, RPG side of 鬼谷八荒 Tale of Immortal is fine on paper, but the execution felt thin after the first few hours. The idea (Tale of Immortal is an open-world sandbox based on Chinese mythology and) is there, but the execution never catches up to it. Too many systems are introduced and then abandoned. Checkpoints are frequent enough that a bad run never feels punishing. Not for everyone, and not for me.
