Picked this up on a whim and ended up playing it every evening for two weeks. Subsistence wears its Action, Adventure, Sim influences on its sleeve, and it mostly works. It helps that the premise (Subsistence is a sandbox, first person, solo or co-op, PvE open-world survival) actually shows up in the moment-to-moment play. Pacing is generous, checkpoints are fair, and the whole thing respects your time. The soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting in the quieter sections. If you are on the fence, give it a shot.
A friend recommended it and I owe them one. The Action, Adventure, Sim mix is what kept me playing; Subsistence knows what it wants to be. On paper it is Subsistence is a sandbox, first person, solo or co-op, PvE open-world survival, and for once the game mostly lives up to that. The difficulty curve is gentle at first and then asks more of you, which felt right. It runs well on a mid-range rig, though the later areas get busy. Easy recommend at full price.
I went in with modest expectations and came out genuinely impressed. If Action, Adventure, Sim is your thing, Subsistence delivers it without much filler. The pitch — Subsistence is a sandbox, first person, solo or co-op, PvE open-world survival — is delivered without too much filler. The difficulty curve is gentle at first and then asks more of you, which felt right. It runs well on a mid-range rig, though the later areas get busy. If you are on the fence, give it a shot.
