This game is simply outstanding. I've already racked up about 25 hours of gameplay and it hasn't even properly released yet. If you enjoy strategy games where everyone starts off on the same level and the outcome is solely decided by your actions on the battlefield then this is the game for you. If you want to feel conflicted about whether you should commit your reserve troops to the front lines or try to shoot through the gap, flank the enemy, and completely change the course of the entire battle... this is the game for you. If you want to watch your best laid plans crumble, reform, crumble again, reform, succeed, gain some ground, lose it again... you get the idea. This is the game for you. I've seen some comments and reviews discussing how some people don't like certain aspects of the game. How some units are "OP" and the morale system is ridiculous because "my infantry squads shouldn't be instantly suppressed by a machine gunner". Well, some units in real life were "OP" and the opposing forces just had to find a way around or through them. As for getting pinned by a machine gun, you have a .50 cal round snap past your head and then tell me what you would do. It is the management of these things, along with numerous others, that make Steel Division so great. I'm going to be playing this one for a long time and I look forward to what the devs do with it in the future. Tl;dr - This game is fantastic and it hasn't even released yet.
I really wanted to like this game, but I can't. It has three main drawbacks. The first is that every engagement is a meeting engagement - both sides have limited forces at the beginning of the game and are advancing into the same area. They meet, and both feed in reinforcements as they become available. No assaults, no defences, no prepared positions. Just meeting engagements. The second is much more important. The AI just sucks. You own troops are prone to wandering out into the middle of a field if you don't micromanage them, at which point they get either destroyed on pinned down. The enemy is just as dim, doing the same thing while reinforcing failure. The third is the metric used for determining who wins - it's all about the percentage of the map that you 'own' - if the enemy owns 51% of the map, they win. Casualties don't matter. Attrition doesn't matter. Possessing key ground doesn't matter. Sort of reminds you a bit of World War 1
