I wanted to love this, but it never quite got its hooks into me
I wanted to love this, but it never quite got its hooks into me. The Action, Adventure, Cozy side of Sonic Mania is fine on paper, but the execution felt thin after the first few hours. What it promises (Experience the ultimate celebration of past and future in Sonic Mania, an) is more interesting than what it actually does moment to moment. It asks for a lot of grinding before the interesting parts show up. The soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting in the quieter sections. Try before you buy.

I bounced off it twice before finally giving up
I bounced off it twice before finally giving up. The Action, Adventure, Cozy side of Sonic Mania is fine on paper, but the execution felt thin after the first few hours. It advertises Experience the ultimate celebration of past and future in Sonic Mania, an; what you get is a thinner version of that. The pacing sags in the middle third and never fully recovers. The soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting in the quieter sections. Try before you buy.

This one kept creeping back into my thoughts during the workday
This one kept creeping back into my thoughts during the workday. Sonic Mania leans hard into Action, Adventure, Cozy, and that is exactly the part that worked for me. On paper it is Experience the ultimate celebration of past and future in Sonic Mania, an, and for once the game mostly lives up to that. It never wastes your time with filler encounters. The soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting in the quieter sections. I will be back for another run.
