About Jalopy

Navigate miles and miles of tyre changing, fuel burning, carburettor busting, mud clattering terrain, through night and day, rain and shine. Adapt to whatever the procedurally generated world of Jalopy can throw at you. Upgrade, maintain and care for your Laika 601 Deluxe motor vehicle. Keep close attention to everything from the state of your tyres, the condition of your engine and even the space in your trunk. Repair each aspect of your scrappy little car and install unique upgrades to deal with the changing world. Everything from cargo weight to the condition of your carburettor will determine how your car performs on the open road. The rise of capitalism brings an economical conundrum. Scavenge for scraps to make a small return of investment, or become a baron of the open road and smuggle contraband under the eyes of border patrols to make a sizable profit. Developer Greg Pryjmachuk worked on the Formula 1 franchise from 2009 through to 2014. In late 2014, Greg began work on this new driving simulation featuring the fictional Laika 601 Deluxe car; reminiscent of the East German “Trabbie”, it will need much love and care to keep it going on this memorable road trip!

IMPORTANT: READ BEFORE BUYING

IMPORTANT: READ BEFORE BUYING If you are wondering why Jalopy is left full of game-breaking bugs and will never get fixed, it is not because the developer gave up on it. It’s because the publisher, Excalibur Games, completely locked the solo developer (Greg / Minskworks) out of his own game. Here is the truth behind what happened: As the game neared full release, the publisher tried to force the developer to sign a contract to rush out a sequel in just one year. Knowing he couldn't deliver a quality game in that timeframe as a solo dev, Greg refused. Because he didn't agree to their terms, the publisher cut off his access to the game completely. They pushed Jalopy into a 1.0 "full release" themselves, leaving it broken and preventing the developer from ever patching or fixing the bugs. Since the publisher legally owned the rights to the IP, they hired an entirely different studio to make a clone called Road to Guangdong. They marketed it using Jalopy’s name, leading a ton of players to blame the original dev for a terrible cash-grab he had absolutely nothing to do with. The developer lost his sleep, his sanity, and his own game to a predatory publisher contract. He does not see a dime from these sales, and he is legally barred from fixing the bugs. If you want to actually support the developer, skip Jalopy and check out his newer game, Landlord's Super, which he made with a much better publisher who treats him right. This game was really fun, but as time goes by, the code will only continue to rot, and the bugs will get worse and worse, thank you for reading,

As much as I love the game, the publisher absolutely murdered any potential for it

As much as I love the game, the publisher absolutely murdered any potential for it. Greg, the soul developer on the game, did an amazing job and tried the best he could to make this game great. But because the publishing company he went with are absolute ♥♥♥♥♥ (Excalibur Games) he can't provide modding support, because with the contract he's under he can't release the source code to the game. He can't even develop a sequel to the game himself due to him signing over all of Jalopy licencing to Excalibur. Excalibur then went and contracted other developers to try to make a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ squel to this game, which was obviously rushed, had no love put in to it, no user feedback given, no updates and it just failed miserably. It ended up being pulled from Steam altogether. I absolutely love Jalopy, I've had it since 2016 and followed along with every single update. It just breaks my heart that this is the end of the road for Greg. You did a great job dude. I hope you can retire on the peanuts Excalibur are giving you for this. EDIT: It's come to my attention that Greg has been working on / released a new game !! PLEASE CONSIDER BUYING "LANDLORDS SUPER" , EVEN IF UNINTERESTED AND TORRENTING JALOPY INSTEAD. BUYING "LANDLORDS SUPER" WILL DIRECTLY SUPPORT GREG, THE SOUL DEVELOPER INSTEAD OF PUTTING THE MONEY IN EXCALIBURS POCKETS.

When I start this review, I should say I love Jalopy

When I start this review, I should say I love Jalopy. It's a personal favorite game of mine despite not being the best. It's not the most fleshed out game, it's not the craziest, but it's a really nice, chill experience with some bugs. The reason my review is negative despite my love is the publisher. Excalibur Games. Simply put they ♥♥♥♥♥♥ the game's sole developer, Greg. They took the rights to Jalopy, forbade him from releasing the source code (axing the potential for mod support) and pushed out an unfinished version of the game and called it complete. Hell, there was even a half-assed game published by Excalibur that tried to ride off what little hype Jalopy had as it's sequel. It's been since de-listed from steam, but you can no doubt find elsewhere talking about Road to Guangdong. I don't want to harsh on the developers of that too hard without knowing their story, it's entirely possible they jumped at the chance to have a publisher without knowing their game would be used that way. However, I cannot help but feel a little upset seeing that Road to Guangdong got a console release while Jalopy languishes in limbo. Technically finished, but with the potential to be so much more snuffed out. If you want to support Greg, he's working on a new game, Landlord's Super. It's another game I quite enjoy and the publishers, Yogscast Games (Yes, a subsidiary of THAT Yogscast), don't seem to be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ him over. My recommendation? If you got a hankering to play Jalopy, pirate it, and buy Landlord's Super. Or just pirate it. I'm not a cop.
