About Homefront

The year is 2027. The world as we know it is unraveling after fifteen years of economic meltdown and widespread global conflict over dwindling natural resources. A once proud America has fallen, her infrastructure shattered and military in disarray. Crippled by a devastating EMP strike, the USA is powerless to resist the ever expanding occupation of a savage, nuclear armed Greater Korean Republic. Abandoned by her former allies, the United States is a bleak landscape of walled towns and abandoned suburbs. This is a police state where high school stadiums have become detention centers, and shopping malls shelter armored attack vehicles. A once-free people are now prisoners… or collaborators… or revolutionaries. Join the Resistance, stand united and fight for freedom against an overwhelming military force in Homefront’s gripping single player campaign penned by John Milius (Apocalypse Now, Red Dawn). Stand alongside a cast of memorable characters as an emotional plot unfolds in this terrifyingly plausible near-future world. Experience visceral, cinematic first-person shooter action as you fight your way across Occupied USA using guerrilla tactics, and commandeer military vehicles

Great ideas, rough execution

STORY The story, at least at the beginning, is promising and just about close enough to current affairs to have you interested. However, the game is far too forceful with the "oo look how terrible war is" feeling, which seems to be self-defeating: instead of being subtly led into any sort of realisation/agreement, you just feel like you're constantly being struck by a moral hammer that ends up being incredibly annoying but otherwise ineffective. The characters are also less than compelling. Perhaps having more time in the story might help (see note below on playtime). GAMEPLAY The gameplay itself is ok but I remember the odd restrictions in movement popping up (having to take a specific path rather than being able to jump over certain things was limiting for the gamer who decides to mash every button to get round an obstacle!). For some reason, the game dynamics/enemies/tools etc. felt a bit like those in Dishonored (which isn't a bad thing): weird and also quite enjoyable. GRAPHICS Not bad at all, can't complain. PLAYTIME I think I spent about 4 hours completing this game on the hardest setting and I'm not a super skilled gamer. A first person shooter should take at least twice this time to complete! SUMMARY Good gameplay and concept, lacking in story and playtime. Probably only buy if you're bored and the price looks favourable...

I must say that I actually enjoyed this game

I must say that I actually enjoyed this game. However, I cant simply recommend it. The campaign is PAINFULLY short. My first playthrough on the default difficulty only took 3 hours and I was in no rush. This is inexcusable. If you find it for $5 or less, pick it up. Other than that don't bother. I must say that the game was good enough to make me very curious about what Crytek will end up doing with the sequel.

Worth every hour

I've heard that Homefront was the most over-advertised and under-purchased games of its time and that's probably true. It has some brilliant cinematography moments, a solid shooting engine, good storyline, and decent voice acting. I enjoyed every minute I spent playing it and will probably return to do another playthrough later. Good game.
