There is a good game buried in here somewhere

There is a good game buried in here somewhere. Halls of Torment promises a lot with its Action, RPG setup, but the loop wore thin quickly. The idea (Slay hordes of terrifying monsters in this horde survival roguelite. Descend) is there, but the execution never catches up to it. It asks for a lot of grinding before the interesting parts show up. Checkpoints are frequent enough that a bad run never feels punishing. Try before you buy.

I went in with modest expectations and came out genuinely impressed. Halls of Torment leans hard into Action, RPG, and that is exactly the part that worked for me. It helps that the premise (Slay hordes of terrifying monsters in this horde survival roguelite. Descend) actually shows up in the moment-to-moment play. Short sessions work fine here; I rarely lost progress to a bad checkpoint. Checkpoints are frequent enough that a bad run never feels punishing. Worth it, especially on sale.

Picked this up on a whim and ended up playing it every evening for two weeks

Picked this up on a whim and ended up playing it every evening for two weeks. Halls of Torment wears its Action, RPG influences on its sleeve, and it mostly works. On paper it is Slay hordes of terrifying monsters in this horde survival roguelite. Descend, and for once the game mostly lives up to that. It never wastes your time with filler encounters. Performance was solid on my machine, no crashes across a full playthrough. Easy recommend at full price.
