About Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy

A game I made For a certain kind of person To hurt them. Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is a punishing climbing game, a homage to Jazzuo's 2002 B-Game classic 'Sexy Hiking'. You move the hammer with the mouse, and that's all there is. With practice, you'll be able to jump, swing, climb and fly. Great mysteries and a wonderful reward await the master hikers who reach the top of the mountain. To quote Jazzuo himself: "The hiking action is very similar to way you would do it in real life, remember that and you will do well". Climb up an enormous mountain with nothing but a hammer and a pot. . Listen as I make philosophical observations about the problem at hand. . Between 2 and ∞ hours of agonizing gameplay, depending. The median time to finish for my playtesters was 5 hours, but the mean was closer to ∞. . Lose all your progress, over and over. . Feel new types of frustration you didn't know you were capable of. . Magical reward awaits hikers who reach the top.. . Epilepsy warning: contains some surprising elements.

At first, you have fun

At first, you have fun. Then you're annoyed. Then you're raging. Then you're crying. Then you're devastated. And then... you just don't care anymore. You're too exhausted to care. You just keep swinging, and swinging, and swinging. No fear, no pain, no feelings, no thoughts. Until... you get over it.

Hard to put down

“Starting over is harder than starting up.” While playing this game you will certainly understand the meaning of this quote. In Getting Over It you play as a guy in pot. Your goal is to reach the top of a mountain and the only tool you are given for this task is a hammer that is controlled by your mouse movement. There are different ways to utilize your hammer to overcome different obstacles, the game never really explains how you should approach things though. It dumps you at the foot of the mountain and from there you are on your own. Getting Over It is a game to test your patience, determination and ability to handle setbacks like not many other. The game is designed in a way that, at almost any point, there is a risk to fall back down and lose a lot of progress. It can be heartbreaking to get to a certain part after hours of work and to lose all of that with a single mistake. You will notice however, that once you know how to approach an obstacle, parts that first seemed impossible become almost trivial. While some people hate the concept of no guaranteed progress, exactly those moments of frustration when you fall down make the feeling of accomplishment, once you reach the top of the mountain, as great as it is. This game is pretty much a life lesson in game form on how to deal with setbacks and I very much appreciate the idea and concept behind it. I also have to add that I really enjoyed the narration, which was done by Bennett Foddy himself. Having to listen to some motivational quotes after falling down certainly helped, *ahem* yeah… Quick note about the achievements: To get 100% in this game its required to reach the top of the mountain 50 times. If you feel like testing your determination, this is your game.
