A friend recommended it and I owe them one. The Action, Shooter mix is what kept me playing; DOOM: The Dark Ages knows what it wants to be. The pitch — The Slayer goes medieval with a shield saw and a dragon. — is delivered without too much filler. It never wastes your time with filler encounters. Checkpoints are frequent enough that a bad run never feels punishing. I will be back for another run.

This one kept creeping back into my thoughts during the workday. The Action, Shooter mix is what kept me playing; DOOM: The Dark Ages knows what it wants to be. It helps that the premise (The Slayer goes medieval with a shield saw and a dragon.) actually shows up in the moment-to-moment play. Short sessions work fine here; I rarely lost progress to a bad checkpoint. There is more content here than the price suggests. Easy recommend at full price.

It took an hour to click, and then I could not put it down. DOOM: The Dark Ages leans hard into Action, Shooter, and that is exactly the part that worked for me. On paper it is The Slayer goes medieval with a shield saw and a dragon., and for once the game mostly lives up to that. It never wastes your time with filler encounters. The soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting in the quieter sections. Worth it, especially on sale.
