Picked this up on a whim and ended up playing it every evening for two weeks. Derail Valley wears its Adventure, Sim influences on its sleeve, and it mostly works. On paper it is Drive massive trains and build your career in a vast open railway network. For, and for once the game mostly lives up to that. The difficulty curve is gentle at first and then asks more of you, which felt right. There is more content here than the price suggests. Easy recommend at full price.
It took an hour to click, and then I could not put it down. The Adventure, Sim mix is what kept me playing; Derail Valley knows what it wants to be. The pitch — Drive massive trains and build your career in a vast open railway network. For — is delivered without too much filler. It never wastes your time with filler encounters. Performance was solid on my machine, no crashes across a full playthrough. If you are on the fence, give it a shot.
