About Calico

Calico is a day-in-the-life community sim game where you are given an important and adorable task: rebuild the town’s cat café and fill it with cute and cuddly creatures! Build up your café by filling it with cute furniture, fun decorations, yummy pastries, and get it bustling with animals again! Calico is meant to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The gameplay reflects that with a laid back, low stress creative environment to explore and play in. Character Creator The Calico character creator will allow players to create their own magical person to experience the world through. There will also be plenty of clothing to choose from and collect throughout the game! All Animals are Interactive! The player will encounter many animals in the world of Calico. Once befriended, you can name them, add them to your party, or send them to their new home at the café. Animals in your party will follow you everywhere you go and listen to your commands. The animals in your café will relax and play with any customers that pop in for a visit. Café Decoration Your task in Calico is to bring the town's café back to life again. This isn’t just achieved by bringing in cats and animals alone

There's no denying it's a very charming little game- but it is very little, and a lot more simplistic than I thought it would be. I really thought there would be more emphasis on managing the cat cafe, but beyond decorating and picking what animals you want to have around, you really don't DO much with the running of the cafe. So far I've spent most of my time running errands for people in order to unlock areas that...allow me to run errands for other people. This unlocks patterns and cosmetics and progresses the (thin) storyline of the characters. The characters are very sweet and have cute designs, but they don't seem that deep, and you really can't talk to them about anything except for what errands they need you to do. I see a lot of comments about how LGBT friendly this game is, and as a trans man, I kind of have to disagree. If you are of a certain presenting gender, and body type, then there is definitely a lot of representation. I tried making a character based off myself, and was really uncomfortable with how curvy and feminine the character still looked despite my best efforts. You aren't given a chance to give your characters pronouns, and many of the spell icons show a clearly female presenting silhouette as a stand-in for a player character- as if the game really, REALLY wants your character to be female. I have zero issues with games that have a female protagonist, but if that's what the developers had in mind, they should have just went for it. Bottom line: as cute as it is and as much as I love the idea, there just doesn't seem to be enough gameplay here to reccomend it. And that's a real shame.

Worth every hour

If you have a hat on and you put a small animal on your head, the small animal will also wear a small version of your hat, and I think that is peak game design.

From my 5 year old daughter: The game is wonderful. Calico is my favorite game. I love the potions in the game, especially the hair makeover potion that makes your eyes glow.
