Breathedge isn't a great game

Breathedge isn't a great game. It's two pretty good games sharing one title. Game 1 is just what it looks like on first glance: a free-roaming space survival game where you gather resources to build upgrades to increase how far you can safely travel. You can put plenty of hours into game 1 and have a grand old time, building up bases or puttering around on refurbished vacuum cleaners. It's pretty good. Game 2 kicks in kinda suddenly, though Breathedge does give you plenty of warning that you're about to pass a point of no return. In game 2, you leave behind any bases or vehicles you've built to engage in a largely linear story experience. Resources are abundant, but you don't really need them because there's no reason to actually build much of anything anymore. The gameplay takes a serious downgrade into full-on Walking Sim territory, but the writing takes a noticeable step up in quality now that it can just follow a linear ship. It's basically what you'd get if you took Portal 2 and removed all the puzzles. Not great. Pretty good. This isn't an unfinished game. It's two unfinished games glommed together into one full-length experience. I give it a thumbs up because I had a good time, but the second half still left me rather disappointed at all the unrealized potential. Overall, it consider it worth the money and time I spent on it. Calibrate your expectations appropriately and you might enjoy it as well.

I wanted to love this game

I wanted to love this game. It seems to check off so many mechanics I like, offers the promise of being like Subnautica but in space. At first I was finding lots of the same enjoyment, "diving" into space to explore and gather resources before hurrying home to see what new things I could craft. But, two things happened. I lost interest in the narrative, which just didn't seem very cohesive and good, and is scattered amongst random bits of humor, trying to be edgy but often just being uncomfortable. Secondly, the awaited conclusion of the game.. sucks. The entire format of the game changes, from being an open world survival craft exploration game to being a corridor shooter. A very, very bad one. All you have to look forward to is awkwardly shooting at a few turrets, two boss fights which both are simply red-light green-light running to designated spots. No more interesting exploration, no more habitat construction, no more foraging and gathering resources necessary. I stubbornly finished out the game, and am left very disappointed.

Its a good, easy going, story focused single player space game

Its a good, easy going, story focused single player space game. I would play it again. But it has its flaws. +great atmosphere and visuals +great perfromance, runs perfcetly, no crashes +no bugs encountered +best for people that love to float in space and explore space and derelikt spaceships +-surival elements are quite easy +-combat elements are very limited -base building feels like afterthough; it has to be said that the story makes you abandon your base quite early and you wont get opportunity to build bases later in game; you can come back to it only after finishing the story -early game is slow, I recommend to focus on progressing until you unlock better mobility, that makes exploring drastically better After early game I started to getting impresions that this is like Subnautica in space, but then the game changed its course and focused on story while surival and base building got reduced. And story is good, I like it. You gotta be in a mood for this style of humour, because thats central for this game. However due to some game design decisions and game elements balance (humour, base building, survival) it starts to feel more like a story and less than a game.
